Overview

Cantaloupe and prosciutto. Who would have ever thought such contrasting ingredients could combine into such a mouth-watering appetizer? Villa Elena is very much like that. It’s a magic potion that impeccably fuses Londoner chic with the candidness of the Sicilian countryside. Villa Elena’s exterior draws you in with its coral walls and arched columns. The endless hilltop view, garden of herbs, landscaped olive groves, and immense pool area join hands to create a setting which will leave you no choice but to unwind. The home’s interior, a small universe of contemporary design in itself, is filled with furniture pieces that’ll make you giddy with excitement. And for those of you who understand the true value of an awesome kitchen….well, get ready to have the time of your life here.

Property details

Now seriously…who needs a lullaby when you’ve got the rolling hills of Sicily? The quiet drive to Villa Elena reminds you of how good it feels to be still and unhurried. You shift gears and make your way up the road leading to the home. As soon as Villa Elena comes into view, a childish grin spreads across your face. Yipee!
The exterior of the house boasts a cheerful mix of symmetric lines and curved arches. Red walls alternate with white surfaces. The main entrance to the right of the home opens out onto a long, descending driveway. On the left, a cascading garden of herbs sits contently above an outdoor dining area that’s fully equipped with a wood-burning oven and a BBQ area. Out front, you’ll find a newly-refurbished pool with a spacious sun deck, a well-tended grove of olive trees that looks out onto the valley below, and a circle of blooming flowers around an old fountain. Cosy al-fresco dinners with grilled Sicilian eggplants and Marsala wine after long, lazy days by the pool. Sure sounds fabulous, doesn’t it?

The moment the front door of the home swings open, you are transported into another place. It’s a haven of contemporary design and modern sleekness. The multi-level setting sets the stage for a truly “cool” interior. On the first floor, a two-part living room, with a tv and sitting corner, is furnished spectacularly. On the second floor, you’ll find the bedrooms. Each one has a different coloured theme, an en-suite bathroom - and in some of them, an IPOD-compatible vintage radio. The “green room” has a classic feel to it while the “red room” is a delicious explosion of sunlight and impassioned images. A quick descent down a marble staircase will lead you to the ground floor. Here, you’ll find the magnificent, fully-equipped kitchen with sliding doors that open out to a huge veranda. (We tried doing the tango around the 3-meter long dining table and we actually thought we were pretty good.) To the left of the kitchen, awaits another surprise – the Games room. Sporting a football table, an American pool table and an endless variety of children’s toys, this room will have the little ones go absolutely wild!
Unwind, relax, have fun, spend some quality time with friends and family, and take a little time out…you deserve it.

Area details

Villa Elena is located in the small town of Camastra, just a short drive from the city of Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples on the south-western coast of Sicily. Apart from it’s fantastic panoramic position at the top of a hill in the heart of Sicily, Camastra is also ideally situated for day trips to many of the island’s unique attractions. These include the Roman mosaics of Piazza Armerina, the Greek archaeological treasures of Syracuse and Eraclea Minoa. The pristine beach of Eraclea, Torre Salsa, Scala dei Turchi and the more popular beach resort of San Leone are within close reach. Whether it is beach fun or cultural exploration, you can have it all.

Additional Information

The swimming pool is open to guests from 13th April to 2nd November. The pool is available out of season for an additional charge of € 200 per week.

The Nutty Flower Festival: Elena - February 2013

Flower power hits Agrigento, Sicily, this month, as the first blush on the trees heralds the start of the Sagra del Mandorlo, the Almond Blossom Festival (Feb 1-10; www.sagradelmandorlo.net). Locals get in the festive spirit with concerts and fireworks, but the setting is the star: the ruins of the dusty Valley of the Temples (www.parcodeitempli.net £8 entry). Italy's most under-visited ruins provide a magical, mythical backdrop to the candyfloss blooms. Catch the bus from Agrigento train station: numbers 1, 2 and 3 drop you at the temple entrance. Solo Sicily (www.solosicily.com) has a week at the plush sixbedroom Villa Elena in Agrigento from £2,810.

MARIE CLAIRE: (...) Driving across the interior of the island towards the south coast and Agrigento is equally dramatic. A bridge that seems to go on forever lifts up the road as if we're flying through the arid valley. We pass small shabby farms and the sheep that make all that pecorino cheese, plus thousands upon thousands of olive trees. Then, just as I spot the sea in the distance, the landscape becomes gentler, greener and more open.
Our next home is a palatial, six-bedroom porperty with grand modern arches. Villa Elena's pool is ridiculously huge, there are stylish black hammocks rocking under artfully planted palms, enormous comfy beds, a five star kitchen and an outdoor wood-fired pizza oven, It's like arriving at a slick boutique hotel minus the sniffy guests and overly trendy staff. Instead we get the rabble that is all our friends, hot from their long journeys from the UK and claiming they've already bought up all the booze in our local alimentari. Better still, they all love cooking and every evening the kitchen buzzes with masterchefs whipping up a feast. Suddenly, I realise – despite all the chaos and wrangling when you're trying to organise it – holidaying with a big group is just brilliant. (...)

    THE SPACE
ELLE: If you want head off on a relaxed yet luxurious holiday with friends, Villa Elena in the southeast of Sicily is the perfect choice. Sleeping up to 12 people in extreme comfort - all colour-themed double rooms with en-suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs - the attention to detail here rivals the best five-star hotels. There are iPod docks in every room, a cabinet full of the latest DVDs, hair straighteners in the bathroom and basketball and volleyball nets by the pool. We loved the huge kitchen (and the fact that someone came in every morning to clean it), which had a glass wall where we sat looking out at the sunset, drinking local wine and playing high-stakes Monopoly. The sourrounding towns are small, but you'll find street markets almost every day, as well as grocery stores with fresh produce and well-priced wine. Our final tip? Forget the diet and try ricotta-filled delicacies from the local bakeries.

    THE AREA
The closest major city to Villa Elena is Agrigento, worth a visit for its ancient temples and boutique shops. Near by Camastra provides daily essentials and you'll often find the town's menfolk lining the pavements watching the world go by. If you like sand and surf, head to San Leone, a 20-minute drive away - the sandy beaches stretch for miles along western and eastern coastlines.

    THE FOOD
This place is a foodie's paradise. There's an option to have chefs come in and cook for you, but you can also take cookery classes in the villa or visit the local vineyards. Our tip for dinner is La Borghesiana in Naro (335 574 9503), where we ate the best meal we've ever tasted.

    THE EXTRAS
It's the non-essentials that really take this place to the next level. There's a games room, Powerplate and running machines, an outdoor area with a huge table, pizza oven, barbecue and herb garden. And you can even arrange for a beauty therapist to drop by to give you a treatment.

    GETTING THERE...
A one-week stay at Villa Elena starts from £3,400 in June, enq(020) 7193 0158;solosicily.com. Reduced prices are available for smaller parties. Villa Elena is a 90-minute to two-hour drive from each of Sicily's airports (Catania and Palermo) and its hillside location means you'll need to drive to most places. Car hire can be arranged with solosicily.com.

We spent a great week at Villa Elena - having been renting villas for a few years now, this is the first time that it looked exactly like the photos and definitely exceeded our expectations. We couldn't fault a thing. There is so much room everywhere you never feel on top of each other. The place was spotless and coming down every morning to find the kitchen clean and tidy was a great bonus. The kitchen is perfect for family cook-ins, we even tried the pizza oven but fortunately had other food cooking on the bbq as well! Fresh herbs grown in the garden for our use was a lovely touch. If we come to Sicily again we would definitely use soloSicily - they couldn't have been more helpful.

  • Ian Wachters - Netherlands | April 2011

We had a very good holiday. The villa was fantastic – even better than what we had hoped. Unfortunately the weather was not that good, although we could enjoy the sun for at least a couple of days. A couple of positive things I would like to mention: Nice villa, very well equipped and very well serviced (daily cleaning, direct resolution of problems by housekeeper), nice garden.· Friendly support from you, the house keeper and the lady who was there when we arrived (Hetty). Good information in the villa: restaurants, local information. Good / smooth service from soloSicily: reservation, payment, travel pack, advise on small things, changing of the rooms, etc. All highly appreciated.
On the down side (if I would need to mention any): Of course we did not like it that we could not go to our villa that we had chosen originally. It was a bit silly that we had to change our plans just a couple of weeks before when we had already booked all flights – however, you resolved this in a professional way.
